11/11/2012 Congratulations to Joe Avis

Very many congratulations to our 16 year old 1st team GK, Joe Avis who, following a fine performance for Wessex Leopards at the recent Futures Cup, has been selected in a squad of 32 for England training. This squad will be trimmed later in the season and Joe is competing with 2 other GK's for a spot in the England squad.

We wish him all of the very best with the training.

17/09/2012 Ladies 1st WIN Pre-Season Tournament
The excitement and anticipation for the forthcoming 2012-2013 season gained a little more speed yesterday following the outstanding performance of the 1st XI Ladies. Playing against strong opposition from both Prem 1 and Prem 2, the ladies put together the set plays and plans we have been working so hard on over the past weeks and came away victorious...and we even won a cup and some vouchers!!!

The team performed magnificently throughout (even though we know there are some areas for us to work on) drawing the first game 2-2 and then winning the remaining four games without conceding a goal, scoring a further 8 goals in the process. This is a fresh looking team with much greater flexibility across the squad and we can be encouraged by our unbeaten start to the season, but the hard work really starts now and the team are all too aware of this...Not that I normally do this, but seeing as though it has been so long since we have lifted any form of tournament trophy in, well forever, a special mention to each and every one of our players on the day: Sal, Kim, Summer, Shannon, Stacey, Helen, Di, Char, Robbo, Robyn, Hol and Laura Beeley (and me!!)...and to our squad players/managers that couldn't be on the pitch with us but nevertheless make us work harder and be stronger each and every game - Maria, Psycho and Zo

Roll on league next week!!!

27/08/2012 McHaggis strikes for Scotland !
Most of you will already know that Haggis has been adopted by Scotland this year and that he was selected to play for the Scottish Over 40's Masters squad in this year's International tournament held at Canterbury.

I'm very happy to report that Haggis played in 5 matches for Scotland, scoring one goal and helping them reach the semi-finals of the competition, where they were defeated by Australia with the last hit of the match.

More importantly, Haggis became Chief BBQ chef during his week, managing to feed most of his fellow squad members (and the Scottish Over 45's) highly non-nutritional food.

Well done to McHag and expect to see him turn up for training / coaching in some Anzac kit.

16/07/2012 Men's Summer League 1st team
Following the results in the Summer League last week, the 1st team are now confirmed as Champions of Division 2.

11/07/2012 Promotion for Summer League 1st team
Congratulations to captain Tom Fowler and all the players in the Summer League 1st team, who gained promotion to Division 1 last night following a 6-2 defeat of Chipsters. Only one team - Rascals - can equal the boys on points and our goal difference is huge so it's highly likely that we will end up as Champions.

Special mention to Jordan who stepped in as Captain for a few games whilst Tom was away.

30/06/2012 Exciting Volunteering Opportunity for all
We have recently developed an exciting opportunity for our members to become involved in the communication activities of our club.

On offer are 2-3 placements to work (on a voluntary basis) alongside the Communications Officer and Development Coordinator to create a buzz about Yate Hockey Club.

This is an ideal opportunity for anybody, particularly those who wish to pursue a career in media, journalism, communications and/or marketing but not excluding other vocations, to gain much needed experience that can be used in personal statements and added to Curriculum Vitaes.

Successful applicants will be responsible for a wide range of communication within the club including:
Writing and publishing match reports for the website and local press
Organising opportunities to market our club through local media
Developing and maintaining the club website
Contributing and Producing the club newsletter ‘For the Badge’
Developing innovative methods to ensure all club members and the wider community know what is happening at our club.

Applications should be made in writing outlining why you feel you would be a suitable candidate. You should include the skills you could offer to the role and why the experience will be of benefit to you (e.g. it may support your application to university). You may also include any other information you feel is appropriate. Please send to Vicki at noonoo1@hotmail.co.uk no later than August 15th 2012.

Interviews will take place in late August (dates to be advised)

05/06/2012 Presidents Day 2012 - Sunday 2nd September
Date for your diaries - Presidents day 2012 will be held on Sunday 2nd September 2012. This is an opportunity for all club members to get together, play some hockey and raise money for charity. Watch this space for more info.

19/05/2012 Yate Mens 1st team promoted

We have received some excellent news from the West of England League Committee - the Mens 1st team have been promoted and will play next season in Conference North, this league is one below the newly named Championship (the old Premier 2).

Great news for our young team and they now have some hard work this Summer to ensure that they are ready to take advantage of our good fortune.

19/05/2012 McHaggis - our newest international star

The Head Coach of our junior section, Haggis, attended the recent trials for the West over 40's but was very unlucky - in my opinion - to miss out on selection for the final squad. Anyway, every cloud has a silver lining and the West were asked by Scotland if they could provide one or two players as they were struggling for numbers and Haggis (and a chap called Scotty) were put forward. As Haggis said, the Scots could have been forgiven for thinking that the West were taking the mickey !

So your intrepid reporter went along to see how McHaggis would perform in the blue shirt of Bonnie Scotland and the answer is....... he got injured and didn't score so it was exactly the same as when he plays for Yate !! I'm being a bit harsh as in the match I watched he seemed to be belly butted by a South player and Haggis rolled up the guys ample stomach and then fell to the floor, whereupon he needed to come off for some R & R. However, our plucky Haggis went back on and proceeded to help Scotland gain a short corner - Haggis went to back up the short corner about 5 metres behind the stopper but the astute Scottish coach moved Haggis back another 5 metres which prompted the call ' you've seen Haggis shoot then ?'.

Although I wasn't there to see it, I have heard that McHaggis scored for Scotland the following day in the win against Wales so all-in-all a great weekend for our psuedo Scot.

Hot off the press.........I have since heard that Haggis has been asked to attend Scotland trials for the Home Internationals in June and the post-Olympic event being held at Polo Farm in Canterbury. Haggis tells me that he qualifies on the grounds that his great-grandfather was Scottish (yes mate, and my gran said we were related to the Queen but that doesn't mean I pop in for tea at Buckingham Palace), but we think it's because he used to watch Ballymorry with Rebekah and he wears a skirt in the evening.

Still we wish him good luck as he tries to gain an international cap for our Celtic cousins.
