19/05/2012 McHaggis - our newest international star
The Head Coach of our junior section, Haggis, attended the recent trials for the West over 40's but was very unlucky - in my opinion - to miss out on selection for the final squad. Anyway, every cloud has a silver lining and the West were asked by Scotland if they could provide one or two players as they were struggling for numbers and Haggis (and a chap called Scotty) were put forward. As Haggis said, the Scots could have been forgiven for thinking that the West were taking the mickey !
So your intrepid reporter went along to see how McHaggis would perform in the blue shirt of Bonnie Scotland and the answer is....... he got injured and didn't score so it was exactly the same as when he plays for Yate !! I'm being a bit harsh as in the match I watched he seemed to be belly butted by a South player and Haggis rolled up the guys ample stomach and then fell to the floor, whereupon he needed to come off for some R & R. However, our plucky Haggis went back on and proceeded to help Scotland gain a short corner - Haggis went to back up the short corner about 5 metres behind the stopper but the astute Scottish coach moved Haggis back another 5 metres which prompted the call ' you've seen Haggis shoot then ?'.
Although I wasn't there to see it, I have heard that McHaggis scored for Scotland the following day in the win against Wales so all-in-all a great weekend for our psuedo Scot.
Hot off the press.........I have since heard that Haggis has been asked to attend Scotland trials for the Home Internationals in June and the post-Olympic event being held at Polo Farm in Canterbury. Haggis tells me that he qualifies on the grounds that his great-grandfather was Scottish (yes mate, and my gran said we were related to the Queen but that doesn't mean I pop in for tea at Buckingham Palace), but we think it's because he used to watch Ballymorry with Rebekah and he wears a skirt in the evening.
Still we wish him good luck as he tries to gain an international cap for our Celtic cousins.
