Anything the girls can do ....
Congratulations and good luck to Thomas Child and Jon Matthews who have both been selected for the Gloucestershire U14 boys squad that will travel to Millfield this weekend to take part in the Regional tournament.
The Yate 3rd team, who assured themselves promotion with 5 games left to play won again at the weekend 4-0 against Bristol & West F are now one step closer to the championship title.
The 3rds need 1 more win from their final 2 matches to make the title almost gauranteed, as they have a much better goal difference than their closest rivals UWE, who are 3 points behind.
England qualify!
England became the first team to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals with a 3-2 win over India in the Dhyan Chand Stadium, New Delhi. The visitors looked home and dry at 3-0 when Ashley Jackson finished off a scrambled mess of a goal in the 48th minute to claim his second strike of the game. But what coach Jason Lee described as "poor execution" let India back into the match for a nailbiting final few minutes.
Gurwinder Singh Chandi turned in a cross from the right by Gurbaj Singh in the 54th minute. Three minutes later, Raijpal Singh finished off a move started when England lost the ball on the Indian 25. Raijpal as had a chance to equalise in the dying minutes as a cross flew across goal. England had secured their 1-0 half-time lead with a James Tindall tap-in in the 16th minute and doubled the lead when Jackson put a rocket of a penalty corner into the top right corner in the 43rd minute.
England play Spain on Monday, a loss will still mean a semi-final spot, but if Australia, as expected, beat Pakistan, then the Kookaburras will almost certainly finish top of the group thanks to the goal difference produced by their 12-0 thrashing of South Africa. Earlier in the day, Spain showed the rest of the sides in New Delhi how to play against the Kookaburras. Astute aerials and balls into the corner to fast forwards continually turned the Aussies around and stifled their attacking drive. Australia's opener (Luke Doerner, PC, 20mins) came against the run of play. The Aussies stepped up the on-the-ball pressure on the Spanish defence in the second half, and as a result stifled some of the earlier long passing. The Spanish withstood the pressure with their usual quick-footed defence, but the yellow-carding Ramon Alegre in the 52nd minute (for attempting to fell Jamie Dwyer in full flight) tipped the balance in favour of the Kookaburras. Glenn Turner then finished of a corner in the 60th minute. A few spirited attacks gave the Spanish some hope but Australia held out.
The battle of the cellar-dwellers in group B ended in a 4-3 win for South Africa over the higher-ranked Pakistan. Two late penalty corner goals made the scoreline more flattering than Pakistan deserved in a game where they started well but then recaptured their appalling form from their opener against India.
Day Eight Preview
The big game in group B is leaders Netherlands taking on Germany in the third game - this match will probably end up deciding the 1/2 placings in the group. The opener, Korea v Cana will have no effect on the top placings. New Zealand are still in with an outside chance of a semi-final but they face the under-rated Argentinians who have already lost two heartbreakers - last minute against Korea 2-1 and a heroic 4-3 defeat by Germany.
Yate seconds secured the second promotion in a row with a hard fought win over local rivals Bristol and West. Nick White scored with 10 minutes to go, (against 11 and two umpires) to ensure that Bristol UWE in 3rd cannot catch them. Yate need to earn 4 points from their last two games to ensure finishing top spot after leading for most of the season having been closely chased all the way by Bristol University. Yate 2nds next match is at home next Saturday at 2:30 against Bristol UWE who are still in the running for 2nd spot and the second promotion place.
England win but lose Mantell
A tournament-ending ankle injury to England's best defender Richard Mantell marred an otherwise excellent win over Pakistan on day five of the men's Hockey World Cup in New Delhi. Mantell was stretchered off in the 13th minute of the second-half after tumbling over a Pakistan player in the circle while defending a penalty corner. Pakistan's Rehan Butt, levelled the scores at 2-2 deflecting in a cross after the corner broke down.
England's coach Jason Lee was full of praise for the resilience of his side, who then made the game safe with two deflected goals from skipper Barry Middleton (52, 65) and a hard hit, cross-shot from Jonty Clarke. Mantell has dislocated his right ankle and Lee confirmed he will not play again in this World Cup. Fortunately the side has other defensive options, although Lee says much of the team's playing style has been moulded around Mantell's qualities. Earlier England had played steadily towards a 2-0 half-time lead before some squandered possession allowed Pakistan back into the game.
England's opener was one of the best goals of the tournament so far. Ben Hawes, temporarily at left-half, threw a 70m aerial ball to James Tindall on the left wing. Tindall's hard-hit corss found a sliding Clarke who roofed the shot (20mins). Ashley Jackson (32mins) added England's second . England's resources could be further depleted for their last two pool games. Iain Mackay earned a yellow card for a collision with Muhammad Irfan in the second half in an incident that could attract the attention of the tournament director. In other group B games, Australia knocked in a World Cup record-equalling 12 against a hapless South Africa – goals are too many to list but Jamie Dwyer (all field goals) and Luke Doerner (all PCs) both scored hat-tricks. South Africa had no answer to a rampant Australian team whose penalty corner routines have started to click ominously well..
In the final game of the day Spain outplayed India, and the crowd, 5-2. With one win from three games, the hosts semi-final chances now look slim, while Spain join Australia on two wins, behind England's three from three. England's remaining games are India on Saturday and Spain on Monday. Australia play Spain on Saturday, so one more win for England will will secure a semi-final place.
Day Six Preview
Day six sees some more potentially lop-sided encounters in group A. Korea vs New Zealand is potentially the best of the games. Netherlands should be far too good for Canada and it would be a n upset if the ruthless Germans lost to Argentina – although the Argentinians showed they should not be taken lightly when it took a last-minute Koran penalty corner to beat them on day four.
Eastern hopes head west on World Cup day six
Any faint hopes of an Asian winner at the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi disappeared on day six when Korea capitulated to New Zealand 2-1. The Asian champs put in a thoroughly unimpressive performance and were flattered in the scoreline by a 70th minute penalty stroke. The Blacksticks on the other hand looked like a side starting to relish the challenge of the World Cup with Ryan Archibald to the fore in producing some end-to-end hockey.
The results leave the unbeaten Germany and Netherlands in charge of the semi-final spots in group A, with their clash on Sunday likely to be crucial in deciding the 1/2nd placings. The Kiwis are still in with a sniff, however - a good result against Argentina on Sunday and somem heroics in their final group game against Germany could see them in a coveted semi-final spot. Andy Hayward gave the improving Blacksticks the lead over Korea with a 9th minute with a PC drag-flick, low to keeper Lee Myung-Ho's left. The second followed in the 22minute - captain for the day Dean Couzins netting from the penalty spot, again low to keeper's left, after a goal-bound ball collected a Korean foot. The smartest move of the day was the Kiwis choosing their white alternate strip, rather than baking in black - the sun is shines on the pitch for most of the first half with 4.30pm games. Second-up Netherlands disposed of Canada 6-0 without ever looking really impressive (especially with the scores level at half-time) - but they are improving and are masters of pacing themselves through tournaments. Goals from Taeke Taekema (Pc,PC, 41, 63), Roger Hofman (FG, FG 48, 56), Ronald Brouwer (FG, 43) and Rob Reckers (FG, 53).
The Argentina-Germany game was the pick of the day's matches, with the Argentinians never-say-die spirit winning over the crowd in the Dhyan Chand Stadium. If it was not for a brilliant diving save by Tim Jessault from a reverse-stick hit (sorry didn't get the striker) with nine minutes on the clock, Argentina would have gained at least a draw. They dominated the last quarter of the game and look the best of the teams that won't make the semi-finals - but with three losses (two by a knife-edge) they may not come out of the World Cup with the credit, or placing, they deserve. Martin Zwicker opened the scoring in the 5th minute (FG), Lucas Vila then equalised in the next minute for Argentina. Zwicker then restored the lead turning in a PC after 14minutes. Matthias Witthaus made it 3-1 Germany (FG) in the 23rd and lesser teams would (and have) capitulated against the black machine. Matias Paredes swept in a partly blocked Pedro Ibarra penalty corner in the 34th minute. Martin Haner steadied the German nerves finishing a clever four-man corner move in the 45th. Still the Argentinians came forward and Ibarra netted a corner in the 56th minute to set up the grandstand finish.
Day Seven Preview
Australia vs Spain and England vs India are the key matches in group B on day seven - upsets here and the group will open right up. The South Africa-Pakistan clash is hard to pick and the contrasting styles might produce an exciting match
Congratulations to 15 year old Amy Sweet who has made the Avon U18 squad for this year's County championships and to Molly Buxton who has been selected for the Avon U15 girls squad. Both will be playing at Millfield (we think !) later this month.
Further to the above the following have also been selected for County duty :
Zoe Cullum and Izzy Joy - Avon U14
Pippa Barnes / Maria Jones / Anna Haskins - Avon U15
Nadine Moody - Avon U18
Alice Kennedy is a travelling reserve for the U15's and spare a thought for Shannon Saunders who injured her hand and was not selected on that basis.
Well done to all and there are a couple of girls in the Glos training squads who will find out in the next week or so whether they have been selected.
Congratulations to all of the girls and it has been noted that the common theme is that all of the above attend training regularly and have put in lots of effort over several years.
Come along and support the U15 girls squad who are playing at Yate in the Avon League finals on 21st March in the afternoon, details can be found under the Avon Junior Hockey League web site (see the links section)

Congratulations to Tom Child, Jonny Matthews and Isa Ghadian who have all made the next stage of the Gloucestershire U14 County training
Head Coach Haggis has asked for a reminder to be put on the web site for all junior players that there is training this Sunday 14th Feb at YOSC at the usual time (10.00 - 12.00) and also indoor training in the sports hall on Monday evening between 7-8pm
There will also be training on the following Sunday.
Yate under 18 14 v Old Bristolians 0
In their very first U18 match, Yate fielded a very strong under 18 side in what turned out to be a one sided match against Old Bristolians.
Pippa Barnes totally dominated the midfield field connecting well with Amy Sweet until injury forced her to retire from the game, between them they scored 9 goals, Claire Buckland also scored making the half time score 10 - 0.
In the second half Yate scored 4 further goals through Charlotte Dando, Amy Sweet, Bethany Caley and Izzy Grimes, Rebecca Coles was also unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Jo Mackie, Alaina Herbert, Rosie Belcher and Georgia Haines Woodhouse had little to do in defence but they did secure a clean sheet.
Credit must go to the OB players who never gave up and played right to the end
Girls U14s played a fixture against Dursley / Thornbury and ran out 3-1 winners. Again it is not often that we have fielded U14s, as the Avon League has been geared towards U13 and U15, and the main difference was playing together as an 11 a side on a full sized pitch.
The girls gelled very well together and there were excellent performances all through the team, from GK Raisa Daya, to Katherine Edwards in defence, to Zoe Cullum in midfield, and to Megan Diamond in attack, who scored two clinical goals, with the first goal coming from Isabella Joy. The younger girls in the squad enjoyed the experience and challenge of playing in new conditions.
The Yate U15 and U13 girls were back in Avon League action this week – for the U13s, the A Team had already qualified for the Finals, along with Chippenham A, who just pipped Yate B for the second position in the Finals. This week’s matches were all friendlies, and therefore the Yate A, B and C teams were shuffled around to give the younger players a good experience of playing with the older players. Good performances from all the players, with special mentions to Beth Northeast from Yate C, Megan Long from Yate B, and Poppy Thompson from Yate A.
The Yate U15 A team were back to their winning ways this week and had two great wins beating Redland B 8 - 0 with 5 goals from an in form Amy Sweet and also from Maria Jones, Ellie Diamond and Alice Kennedy. In their second match they beat Yate B 4 - 0 with two goals each from Amy Sweet and Pippa Barnes. The whole team performed really well but player of the day went to Alice Kennedy for her outstanding play.
Yate B were also successful in their first game against Redland B winning 3 - 0. Amongst the goal scorers were Florrie Eccleson and Daisy Tucker. Although the B`s lost to the A team in their second match 4 - 0 they didn’t give up and battled really hard to the end of the game. Imogen Lydford one of the U13 goalkeepers made her debut in goal for Yate B and played brilliantly making several great saves. Player of the day went to Holly Constable who defended brilliantly throughout the afternoon.
Congratulations to Joe Avis, Matt Bethell, Harry Eddolls, Brendan Foreman and Peter Weber who have all made a provisional training squad for Glos U15 boys. If they get through the next round of training, they will be in a position to represent the County at the West tournament on March 28th
Well done to two of our U18 players, Tom Appleby and Andy Moody, for successfully completing their level 1 EHA badge before Christmas. Both are using their qualification by coaching the next generation of Yate juniors.
On the same course, John Hatfield - aka Grandad - also passed and we thought that he would appreciate his name being on the same page as two lads whose combined age is still less than his !
We are pleased to report that one of our youth (and 1st team) players, Jon Appleby, has been offered a place at Oxford University, reading maths and statistics at Worcester College.
Jon, who is a pupil at Colston's school, has been part of our youth set up for several years now, debuting for the first team at 14 and achieving notable success on the pitch, with his finest hour coming in the U15 Avon League win when he scored both goals in the final.
We wish him every success and congratulate him on a great achievement.

Dear All,
My cousin was visiting at the start of the month so most of the newsletter is what she experienced...a new perspective for you.
I have also attached a document regarding the Christmas Party programme that Viva runs around the world. I have to emphasise, that I am not asking for money from those of you who have already been so generous in helping me thus far...I am looking for groups that would be interested in making their Christmas celebrations a little more special by ensuring that some vulnerable children, many who have never had the opportunity for such a special treat, to get to have a Christmas party of their own. Let me know if your work department, hockey team, football club, youth group, kids club - anyone! - would like to help us out.
Thanks so much.
Best Wishes, Elise

Congratulations to Nadine Moody who has been selected for the Wessex Leopards squad that will take part in the Futures Cup. Nadine will take part in a round robin against the other JRPC's with the best players chosen to represent England so we wish her good luck.
We believe that this makes Nadine and her brother, Andy, the first siblings playing for Yate to have reached the West of England squads.
Congratulations to Conor Pinnell and Nadine Moody who have been selected for training with the U16 Wessex Leopards, following matches for Bristol JRPC against Exeter and Eastleigh centres.
Also, congratulations to Joe Avis who has been selected for Hipac training following his excellent performances for Bristol JRPC against the Exeter and Eastleigh centres.
Welcome to the September e-zine from England Hockey. For many readers the season is just about to start while for some, including the England Hockey League, the 2009-2010 season is already well and truly underway.
In the England Hockey League (EHL) Men's Premier Division, East Grinstead have started where they left off last season, sitting atop the table thanks to wins over Cannock and Brooklands MU while in the Women's Premier Division Reading, new to the top division this year, are already showing they will be a force to be reckoned having recorded victories over neighbours Slough and Birmingham University.
Following the start of the EHL season, the European Cup Trophy Tour has made its first stops at Reading and East Grinstead in recent weeks and will be at Surbiton this coming Saturday and Cannock the following week. Why not pop along to see the trophy and have your pictures taken with it?
The start of the new season will see many hockey players, coaches, umpires and spectators getting a grip on the new rules of the game which include the 'self pass' rule and the rule on free hits inside the 23 metre area. With this in mind we thought it would be helpful to signpost anyone interested towards the electronic copy of the Rules of Hockey 2009 which can be found in the Officiating section of the England Hockey website (www.englandhockey.co.uk/officiating). Also in that section, visitors will find recently published guidance for umpires implementing the new rules.
As we have approached the season, England Hockey has also received a number of enquiries regarding pitch markings sparked in part by the new rules. As a result, a statement was released on the England Hockey website and can be found in the Facilities section at www.englandhockey.co.uk/facilities.
Talking of facilities, keep an eye on the website this coming Monday (5 October) for the launch of the forthcoming Capital Investment Programme.

England Men Reach First European Final in 22 Years
England's men have qualified for Sunday's Euro Hockey Nations Championships final in dramatic style.
Jason Lee's boys sealed their place in the gold medal match with an appropriately termed 'golden' goal from Ashley Jackson in the very last minute of extra time to sent the host country, the Netherlands, to semi final defeat.
Before that, England had taken a 1-0 lead into half time after James Tindall's 31st minute strike but Taeke Taekema's penalty corner equaliser on 49 minutes restored parity.
With goalkeepers James Fair and Guus Vogels in top form the remainder was goalless and so to golden goal extra time, when Jackson's cool finish late in the day secured England's place in the final.
When Barry Middleton leads the team out against Germany at the Wagener Stadium at lunchtime on Sunday he will be the first English men's captain to lead his country out at a European Championships final in 22 years.
Moscow 1987 was the one and only time that England's men have previously reached the European final but on that occasion a 1-1 draw against the Dutch was not enough to secure the gold, with England settling for silver after going down 3-0 on penalty strokes.
By contrast, in the 11 European Championship tournaments held since the inaugural contest in 1970, Germany (and West Germany) has won the tournament on six occasions, losing a final only once, to Spain in Madrid in 1974.

England Women Going for Bronze
After the heartbreak of losing their semi final to Germany courtesy of a late golden goal, Danny Kerry's side will be looking to emulate the teams of 2005 and 2007, both of which won bronze after beating Spain in the final match.
In fact, the women have something of a history with the European Championships, having picked up three bronze medals, one silver and a gold in the eight tournaments held before this year.
Watch England v Spain - Women's Bronze Medal Match
The women's bronze medal match gets underway at 12:00 BST (13:00 local time) on Saturday (29 August).
You will be able to see the game screened live online via the official EuroHockey Nations Championships website while Eurosport 2 currently plans to screen highlights from the EuroHockey Nations Championships on Saturday night (30 August) at 21:30 BST.

Welcome to the August edition of the England Hockey e-zine. This month we have streamlined the e-zine to highlight some of the most important items of the moment.
It has been an incredible end to the month with England's men being crowned European Champions for the first time ever and the England women winning bronze at the EuroHockey Nations Championships in Amstelveen.
Throughout both the men's and women's tournaments, England put in consistently impressive performances with superb individual displays contributing significantly to the teams' medal winning positions. Congratulations to both teams and their coaching staff on their successes. Congratulations also go to James Fair and Ashley Jackson who picked up the Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament awards respectively in the men's tournament and the England women's team, who won the Fair Play Award in their competition.
If you missed out on any of the match reports from either tournament you can read them all again at www.englandhockey.co.uk/euromen and www.englandhockey.co.uk/eurowomen.
Also in August, England Hockey announced details of its 2009/2013 Capital Investment Programme. Phase one of the programme, which will allow hockey clubs and organisations to apply for grants, opens on Monday 5 October 2009. Click on the news item below to find out more about the programme.
International success has not been limited to England's senior teams and the England U21 women performed heroically at the Women's Junior World Cup in Boston, USA, where they eventually finished fourth, three places higher than England's previous best finish at the Junior World Cup.
English club sides East Grinstead, Reading and Beeston have found out who they will face in the first round of the Euro Hockey League this year. Reading will travel to Barcelona for round 1a while East Grinstead and Beeston will hope to progress from round 1b in Paris.
In domestic hockey, details of a new playoff tournament in the men's England Hockey League Premier Division were announced. Featuring the top five teams at the end of the season, the new tournament will determine the league champions and teams to qualify for Europe.
Finally for this month, all members of the Hockey Family are being invited to complete a short survey about England Hockey services. England Hockey is looking for individuals from across the Hockey Family to help us to provide the best benefits and services for you. Everyone who participates in the survey will be entered into a monthly prize draw to win one of five England Hockey goody bags.
