Mens training will continue until Wednesday December 14th, we will break for Christmas and resume on Wed 4th January 2012
Congratulations to the U18 girls who defeated Bath Buccs in the first round of the EHA Plate competition. We have struggled to a full squad out for this competition as some of the girls work and others were at JAC competitions so all credit to Manager Louise Sweet for her efforts in pulling together a squad and a very well done to all the players who played on Sunday.
We drew 2-2 in full time after leading twice but managed to win 4-2 on penalty flicks with Amy, Chloe, Alice and Maria all scoring from the spot but credit to Anna Haskins who pulled off 2 saves to thwart TBB.
We have drawn Isca at home in the next round.
We are running 3 Rush Hockey taster sessions on the netball courts on consecutive Thursdays, starting on the 10th November.
The idea of Rush is to offer adults the opportunity to play hockey for the first time or to encourage previous players to start again. Our members are more than welcome to join in as well and all equipment is provided.
So, if you want to see what the whole Rush Hockey thing is all about, then come down and bring some mates with you!
The U16 boys played their first two fixtures in the revamped EHA tournament a few weeks ago and secured victories against Cheltenham and Gloucester. They travelled to Gloucester today knowing that wins over Firebrands and Cirencester would confirm their place in the Regional tournament in March.
When we turned up, Firebrands only had 7 players for the opening match against Gloucester, so we lent them some of our players and our 12 year old GK,Sam Kemp, who made several good saves and demonstrated how much he is improving. After this match, Firebrands decided not to play our match so we were given a walkover.
This meant that all efforts were concentrated on the match against Cirencester, the fourth meeting between the clubs at various age groups and genders in 8 days. Cirencester were leading 2-1 in wins so it was important we evened up the score. From the outset, the boys attacked Cirencester and Matt Bethell ended up with a first half hat-trick to calm the nerves. From my point of view, it was interesting to observe the improvement in players, most notably Matt Wilson who was our player of the match. Matt always attends training and his technique and skills have dramatically improved over the season so well done to him.
Our defence was fairly solid, albeit we allowed too many passes to be easily made in and around our 25 which meant that the defence of Tom Child, Matt Hughes, Henry Keedwell, James Clark and Matt Wilson were called upon to make a few last ditch tackles. However, as a general rule, they were well protected with Max Nethercott, Dan Colquohoun, Joe Davies, Jack Instrall, David Sharp and Matt B.
Four players rotated up front with Nick Pagett and Jonny Matthews and Rhys Gamlin and Aidan McMahon making telling contrbutions and causing the Cirencester defence a lot of problems. Matthews demonstrated his improvement by adding two goals in the second hald, the final goal being a great strike from the right of the 'D'.
The second half also showed that, even when the more experienced players were benched, the team still dominated and played arguably better hockey in that there was more passing. Several defence splitting passes were made by Dan, Max and Aidan which could have led to further goals.
We have one fixture left, against Buccs, which will be our toughest fixture but whatever the outcome we have reached the next stage, a great achievement.
Andy Moody and Andy Bethell are runing a hockey camp at the Yate Outdoor Sports Complex during half-term. Both are EHA qualified to Level 2 and are CRB checked and have First Aid and child welfare qualifications.
The camps will run from 9.30am - 4.00pm on 25 / 26 / 27 October and will concentrate on exercises to improve technique, small sided games and competitions at the end of each day.
The cost is either £20 per day or £50 for the 3 days.
If you are interested, please call either Andy Moody on 07845 190825 or Andy Bethell on 07866 418385 or e mail the guys at yosc.hc@gmail.com
Yate over 40's will have to try their luck in the EHA Plate competition after Taunton came back from a goal behind on three occassions to force a draw in normal time, then win on penalties after extra-time failed to produce another goal.
Taunton turned up and several were sporting dark hair, with not a gray fleck in sight ! Either they colour their hair or stress levels are lower in Somerset than South Gloucestershire.
Yate were buoyed by the arrival of Grandad 10 minutes prior to the start of the match, a record for him as he's usually dropping the goldfish off to his Mum's or something like that, which prevents him from getting to the pitch earlier. We started slowly and Taunton were on top but Robin Durham was doing a great job between the sticks - yes, Simon Mason may not have copied his technique but the ball stayed out and that's what counts !
Billy, Grandad, Martin Weavers and Mike Taylor started to get hold of the ball and some fluent play found Simon Clarke on the right, he skipped around the defender and cracked a fine shot into the bottom left. This was somewhat against the run of play and the visitors deservedly drew level, although my age prevents me from remembering how. Half-time and Yate lucky to be level, already thinking we might be better off in the Plate.
We started the second half much as the same as the first ie badly, but good defence from Phil Boynes - wearing his nice new socks - Rob Child, Martin Emery and Ian Weller (oh yes and Crabbie up front), kept the Vale at bay. Robin was still bouncing around like a demented contortionist and frustrating the Vale attackers.
Yate re-took the lead following a clash of heads involving Mike Taylor and one of the opposition. Mike was a bit concussed so we told him he was Ashley Jackson and sent him back on - we did consider asking him to count fingers to see how bad the concusssion was but we weren't too sure he'd know if he hadn't hurt his head so we didn't bother. From our free hit, the ball was fed out to Mike Small and his great cross was slapped in by Simon, lurking by the P spot.
Taunton came back with great spirit and took advantage of the Yate defence needing oxygen and equalized shortly after. In what was now end to end hockey, Grandad found room in the centre, rounded the GK and smashed a goal bound shot - at their defender. Our very competent umpire, Adrian Chambers, awarded a penalty and yours truly stepped up (having to prise the ball out of Crabbie's hands) and rolled in what I'm sure will be the slowest penalty of the season.
This is getting boring so apart from one great Durham save, and a boring 10 minutes of ET, it was down to flicks. Grandad up first (he needed to leave to pick the fish up), great flick. Then Crabbie and he kindly rolled the ball to the GK to give him a confidence I don't think he needed. Then it was Simon and Mike, both scored tidily (haven't mentioned Taunton cos they kept scoring, with Robin looking like a demented contortionist on ice). Up stepped yours truly again with good intentions of a top left flick, however I did a 'Tim Davenport' (hit the post - read the Buccs web site) and we were out.
Crabbie was the first to 'console' me but he needs to learn that consoling means putting on a sad face even if you don't mean it ! I am now in the process of getting Crabbie and me in an advert with Pizza Hut so we'll have the last laugh.
Good luck Taunton in the next round, don't turn up with more players than the hosts next time, we consider that to be poor etiquette!
Congratulations to Imogen Lydford who has won the club logo competition, this was voted by over 50 members at the club Presidents day. The logo will be added to the club website and used on any official headed note paper.

Today I bring to you the utterly fabulous news that Billie has been selected for both the over 45s and over 50s West of England Hockey teams to play in a national tournament in August.
Watching the selection process on the day, Helen Seavill reported:
"When we arrived it was clear that mum had quite a few more years experience than the mass majority on show (in fact she probably could have been some of their mums), but she did not let this deter her with mum choosing to show the other members how to play Yate style... Defending a short corner early in the first match, mum opted/was picked (it wasn't clear from where I was sat) to run out and charge the ball down. A slick injection meant that mum had to put the turbo boost on. With the striker poised to shoot mum did what only mum knows best and put her body on the line by slide tackling the ball, winning it of course. I looked across to the selectors who were just trying to pick themselves up from the sheer amazement and thought to myself...she might be in with a chance here!! All participants worked hard all day and it was clear that by the end of the day some legs were feeling a little weary but fight on they did with mum leading the way throughout......"
Billie was sadly unavailable for comment, so Helen stepped in to provide Billie's summary of the day:
"Mum and I were talking on the way home and mum was saying that all the ladies were talking about was how they were going to ache in the morning and how they hoped they would be able to get up.....Billie-the warrior-Seavills simple reply.......'I'll just be happy if I wake up!!'........."
Billie you are an inspiration!!!
The national tournament is used by England Hockey selectors to identify players for the England Hockey Masters Squads.....My money is on Billie going all the way (no pressure though!)
The national tournament is to be held in August at Cannock...... so girls get your camping gear ready because we have a roadtrip to plan for!!!
The younger of two teams put in by Yate in the Savills Plate at University of Bath on Sunday (15/05/2011) rose to challenge with Sammy Peters at the hem with some very active boys Max, Ollie and Oscar in midfield and awesome defending by Tegan , Ellie and Darcy making the team complete our novice goalie Jasmine Giving it their all. They made it through to the semi finals playing six matches back to back, Unfortunately they came up against a very strong team Bath, But they all said they would be back. Well Done to all a great team effort and I am sure the best is yet to come.
