And that's the game...

Yate came into this game off the back of two wins agains teams in the the bottom 3, knowing that this was going to be a very different animal.  Robinsons had given us a difficult match away and as they were currently 4th in the league it was one Yate needed to win.

As the match started Yate had more of the early play, creating more chances early on, but Robinsons fought hard for every ball.  Yate kept the pressure on, and after Adrian Kitchen intercepted a pass he managed to feed the ball through, via Charlie Hopkins to Anthony Bezer, who's shot was parried only as far as Ian 'Crabbie' Crabbe. Ian dutifully slotted the rebound away to give Yate an early win.

Yate had further chances in the first half including a deflected shot from Charlie Hopkins, which looped straight up into the air coming down on the top of the crossbar.  The keeper was nowhere, so it was either a brilliant call or a foolish one to not try and cover it.

The half ended 1-0 and all Yate needed to improve in the second half was covering back and spreading the play that seemed to keep getting caught on the left hand side.

In the second half Yate and Robinsons both came out strong, each winning numerous short corners, but neither side could finish them.  Good runs on the right and left from Mark 'Haggis' Harris and Rich Greaves, and solid play in the middle from Mark 'Pob' Pennicott kept the pressure on.

The always stallwart defence of Rene Wickes, Martin Emery, Ian Redfearn and Rob Hazelwood gave fantastic coverage to James Lewis who was more than a match for all the Robinsons could throw at him.

Yate continued to pressure, with Crabbie hitting the post, and Pete Lamb riding some awful challenges to make a chance from nowhere. Pete also pulled off an amazing full stretch diving challenge in the midfield showing epic commitment to the cause.

The one thing that let Yate down in this match was that after some fantastic build up play to make it into the Robinsons 25 they repeatedly tried to take on too many players and ran into the waiting sticks.  If Yate could have got that final pass in then there would likely have been more goals to be had.

That being said it was again a great performance, particularly by the ever solid Yate Defence with all defenders deservedly being men of the match.

Also due to the other results (Firebrands, who were in 3rd place drew) the win in this match also guarantees the 'Mighty Green Boxes' the Yate 3rd team promotion (failing apocalyptic circumstances) with 40 points already and 5 games to play no team from 3rd downwards can manage more than 39!

Congratuations to all that have played so well this year!! Now to try and ensure that first place finish!
